Frequently Asked Questions

What does ‘NumberScan’ Do?

‘NumberScan’ provides a series of games (tests) that are built upon current state of the art knowledge of the cognitive and neural systems supporting numerical and mathematical processing. When you complete these tests, the site will provide you with a report outlining your numerical strengths and weaknesses, as well as information about the brain regions that support those processes.

    Who is ‘NumberScan’ for?

People of any age or ability can use this site! When you create an account, you will input your age and the tests will be calibrated accordingly.

What can I do with my report?

You can use the report to

      • a) learn more about you or your child’s areas of strength and weakness
      • b) Plan you or your child’s math learning activities
      • c) Show the report to you or your child’s math tutor to help them target their tutoring
      • d) Show the report to you or your child’s school teacher and discuss ways of using the information to support your child’s learning.

How often should I take the the tests?

It’s really up to you and depends on your situation!

      • Single Report: This option is suitable for people who are just curious about your or your child’s numerical strengths and weaknesses. Perhaps you or your child has issues with math in school, or you generally find that you or your child has difficulty with numbers and want to understand your own or your child’s cognitive profile better. Or maybe you want to learn more about how your or your child’s strengths and weaknesses are associated with different brain areas.
      • Premium Subscription: This option is great if you want to keep track of your or your child’s profile over the course of one year. This plan will allow you to take the tests 4 times and receive a new report every time you complete a full set of games (up to a max of 4 times). We recommend you space these reports out over the course of a year, for example, getting one report every 3 months. If you or your child is receiving tutoring, or in school, this option will give you a broad view of changes over the year.
      • Platinum Subscription: This option is great if you want to keep even closer track of your or your child’s profile over the course of one year. This plan will allow you to take the tests 12 times and receive a new report every time you complete a full set of games (up to a max of 12 times). We recommend you space these reports out over the course of a year, for example, getting one report every month. If you or your child is receiving tutoring, or in school, this option will give you a broad view of changes over the year.

Do I or my child need to complete all the tests in one sitting?

There are 7 categories of games included in your subscription. Within each game, there are sets of questions. If you start a question set, you will have to complete it in one sitting (usually around a couple of minutes). However, you can take breaks between sets and start the next set of questions when you’re ready. We recommend that you do all the sets in all the games in one sitting if you can, but if you do have to come back another day, we strongly suggest you complete all sets in all games within a week of starting, to give you the best snapshot of your or your child’s current strengths and weaknesses.
